Tesla to Demolish, Upgrade Fremont Production Line

Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is reportedly deconstructing and modernizing its assembly line in Fremont, California, possibly to launch the large-scale manufacturing of one of their newly designed car models. The timing of Tesla’s application to tear down “numerous pieces of machinery, tools, and services” at the factory in Fremont coincides with the recent leaks of Project Highland Model 3 pictures, which was spotted on the test track at Fremont, with major interior design alterations.

Even though the Model 3 is not Tesla’s top-selling model anymore, it continues to play a significant role in driving sales and is the superior choice for buyers seeking something more compact, sportier or reasonably priced. In the not-too-distant future, the Model 3’s next iteration will arrive.

The removal of the old lines and the setting up of the additional lines appear to suggest that the vehicle being produced on the aforementioned line is changing sufficiently to necessitate new production lines to be required, rather than just an upgrade.

Reports have emerged previously about Tesla modernizing lines at its Fremont factory when the equipment utilized ages or has to be changed for various reasons. Tesla doesn’t completely tear down production lines when new equipment is to be installed. Rather than classifying the line changes as demolitions, the company classifies them as upgrades, improvements or revisions.

Tesla may be pushing through with the impending large-scale manufacturing of the revamped Model 3 under the codename “Project Highland.” The project has previously been demonstrated to feature a radically distinct front-end layout than the present vehicle, if the dismantling of one assembly line and the installation of another one is any indication.

Tesla may be setting up brand-new production lines in anticipation of the project Highland Model 3 going into large-scale manufacturing.

Since the car’s debut in 2017, Fremont has been producing the Model 3. The Model 3 is only produced in one other facility, the China-based Gigafactory Shanghai. Recently, there have been reports suggesting that Tesla would construct the Model 3 Highland in Giga Shanghai; however, Tesla has rejected these rumors, which places the responsibility on the Fremont factory.

The latest filings could be a sign that the new Highland Model 3 would initially be produced in the Fremont facility, and thereafter, Tesla is going to start introducing the updated model in the months to come as it prepares to modify the car.

In order to accommodate the production of Cybertruck packs, the Fremont factory has been undergoing modifications for several months. The factory has also upgraded or added equipment for making batteries.
