NYC Starts Installing Curbside EV Charging Stations

The United States plans on becoming a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, and for a while now, the nation has been pushing for its citizens to adopt electric vehicles. Although electric vehicles (“EVs”) make up a small percentage of the cars on American roads, more people are willing to buy them in exchange for petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. However, one thing that has held plenty of drivers back and prevented EV drivers from using their vehicles without anxiety, is the insufficient and often unreliable network of public charging stations.

New York City, for instance, has nearly 15,000 registered electric vehicles but only a paltry 1,500 charging stations to service those EVs. Additionally, most of these stations are installed inside parking garages in Manhattan, and in some cases, these garages will often charge EV drivers for both the parking spot and the electricity they use. Consequently, the city plans on installing more EV charging stations in all five boroughs, starting with a curbside public charging station in the Bronx.

Unveiled last week by transportation officials, the station is the first curbside public electric vehicle charging station in New York. Antoinea Knight, who delivers food in an electric vehicle with her fiancé Charles Miller, is quite happy with the new charging station. Before, they had to travel out of the Bronx to New Rochelle to charge their vehicle at a Nissan dealership. Not only did this require them to take extra trips, but the station was pretty inconvenient as it wasn’t designated for electric vehicles only.

As such, she says, they would often find plenty of petrol and diesel cars sitting in the parking space, preventing them from accessing the electric vehicle chargers. But thanks to the new curbside EV charger that just happens to be 10 minutes from their home, they can charge their vehicle with minimal hassle. It costs them $2.50 an hour to charge their EV from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; if they charge overnight, they pay just a dollar per hour to charge.

The curbside charger in the Bronx is one of two public charging stations that were unveiled in the city, with the other in Riverdale. As part of the transportation department’s efforts to increase the number of charging stations in all of the city’s five boroughs, the department will install 120 charging stations in partnership with utility company Con Edison; the plan outlines installing 50 of the charging stations by October, with each station able to charge two vehicles at a time.

Con Edison is also working to make EV charging stations more accessible to the public. It plans on installing 18 public EV chargers with a battery system at an empty lot that it owns. The company wants to increase access to public charging without straining the grid.

With an improving charging infrastructure and an ever-increasing variety of EV options introduced by companies such as ev Transportation Services Inc., it will not be long before electric vehicles become as commonplace as their fossil-fueled counterparts currently are.
