Nissan to Release Updated LEAF EV with 373 Miles of Range

Nissan Motor is set to unveil a crossover version of the Nissan Leaf EV with an impressive 373-mile range. The Japanese automaker recently released teaser images of the updated electric vehicle, dubbed the 2026 Leaf, but has not yet revealed major details about the forthcoming update to its iconic Nissan Leaf EV.

As a crossover, the new Nissan Leaf will differ significantly from prior versions, marking a strategic shift in Nissan’s approach to remain competitive in the evolving EV market. With Chinese manufacturers like BYD flooding the market with lower-cost EVs, Nissan is facing increased pressure to maintain a strong presence in Asia’s vehicle sector.

In Western markets, Nissan is also competing against legacy automakers that have struggled to pivot into electric cars. However, U.S. policies favoring domestically produced EVs—which benefit American manufacturers like Ford and General Motors—have further complicated Nissan’s ability to compete in North America.

The updated Nissan Leaf will expand Nissan’s limited lineup of electric cars and could become its most popular Leaf model yet, one industry analyst posits. Although Nissan has not provided detailed specifications, a source at Nissan told BBC’s Top Gear that the new Leaf will have a 373-mile range, significantly improving on the current Leaf’s range by roughly 100 miles.

Nissan’s EV technology has evolved dramatically since it introduced the Leaf well over a decade ago. The first-generation Leaf offered just 73 miles of range and had a starting price of $33,600. Conversely, the current Nissan Leaf comes in two trims, with the base model offering 149 miles of range for $28,140 and the higher trim delivering 212 miles of range for $36,190.

However, despite its historical significance in the EV market, the current Nissan Leaf has struggled to stay competitive. With Tesla, BYD, and other global automakers fiercely battling for market dominance, the Leaf is not the go-to EV for many consumers. Even so, Nissan has sold over 650,000 units worldwide, solidifying the Leaf’s status as one of the most enduring electric vehicle brands.

Despite facing fierce competition, Nissan has played a crucial role in the global EV revolution. As one of the first major automakers to introduce a mass-market electric vehicle, Nissan demonstrated the viability of electric cars to mainstream consumers and helped normalize EV adoption. With the 2026 Leaf’s crossover design and extended range, Nissan aims to reassert its presence in the rapidly evolving EV industry.

The NEV market is promising to be extremely competitive as Nissan joins other firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) in a bid to dominate the different segments of the industry where they have interest.
