Google Maps Unveils New Ways for EV Users to Locate Chargers, Plan Trips

Using an electric vehicle in the United States and other countries has become much easier after Google Maps released new features to help EV drivers plan trips and find public chargers. Electric vehicle ownership comes with a lot of nuances and caveats that typically aren’t involved in owning and operating a regular petrol or diesel-powered car.

For instance, EV drivers going on long trips have to meticulously plan out their routes to ensure there are enough public chargers to keep their cars topped up along the way. Some of the chargers in public stations often have issues or are nonfunctional, which leads to long lines and lengthy wait times.

Furthermore, the scarcity of public-charging stations means that electric vehicle drivers cannot take lengthy trips on a whim; they have to plan their trips in advance to ensure their cars don’t run out of power on the road with no charging station in sight. With the new features for Google Search and Google Maps, drivers will have easier access to helpful information on public charging stations.

These features allow battery electric vehicle (BEV) drivers to quickly and easily find actionable information on the locations of public EV chargers and align their travel routes with charging stations. Drivers can also use the new Google Maps and Search features to precisely locate charging stations in tricky locations such as multilevel parking lots. According to Google, it will begin using artificial intelligence (AI) to provide helpful and detailed summaries over the next several months to help EV drivers locate public chargers with ease.

The summaries could be as detailed as providing step-by-step directions to guide drivers. Google will generate AI-powered summaries using data collated from the millions of user reviews posted to Maps. Drivers will be able to see nearby electric vehicle chargers on their in-vehicle maps as well as useful information such as charge times and charging port availability. The new update will also use an EV’s remaining power level to suggest the best nearby charging stations in vehicles with built-in Google.

An EV filter on google.com/travel will also allow drivers making overnight road trips to find hotels with on-site charging facilities. Moving forward, Google Maps will also prompt users to provide additional information about aspects of customer experience, such as the type of charging plugs and wait times to provide even more helpful user reviews.

Electric-vehicle charging is currently plagued with issues that often make it quite stressful and time consuming. While refilling a conventional gas-powered car takes less than five minutes, recharging an electric car at a public station can take anything from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the number of available functional chargers and the presence of other drivers.

This announcement by Google will make it easier for owners of electric vehicles from brands such as Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) to take longer trips with fewer concerns about where they will find functional chargers.
