Sales of electric cars kept climbing in Portugal last month, with battery-only models jumping 65.2% year-on-year in August to reach 5,079 units sold. This was enough to account for over a third of all passenger cars sold in the country’s showrooms that month.
That single-month share outpaced the electrified segment’s broader position across the year so far, underscoring how quickly EV adoption has been accelerating in recent weeks. The gains came as Portugal’s overall auto market kept expanding too.
Dealers moved 17,209 vehicles of every kind in August, an 11.3% bump compared with a year earlier, according to figures from industry group ACAP. Running the tally from January through August, the country’s total climbed to 197,632 fresh vehicle registrations, 10.3% ahead of where things stood at this point in 2025.
Passenger cars made up the bulk of that activity at just over 14,000 through the month, an 8.4% gain year over year that lifted the running eight-month tally for that segment by 9.5% to 169,323 units.
Commercial and heavy vehicles grew even faster in percentage terms. Heavy vehicles, a category spanning both people-moving and freight-hauling trucks and buses, posted the steepest monthly gain of all at 45.9%, with 674 units sold. The light commercial segment climbed 21.8% for the month, with 2,449 units finding buyers.
Electrification, though, remains the market’s clearest storyline. Over the full eight-month window, roughly three-quarters of all new passenger cars sold in the country ran on some form of alternative power, whether fully electric, plug-in, or conventional hybrid.
That figure speaks to how mainstream these powertrains have become. Battery-electric models alone made up just over a quarter of that eight-month total, well below the more-than-a-third share they captured in August specifically. The gap indicates that Portugal’s electric vehicle segment is picking up speed faster than the hybrids and plug-ins around it.
August’s combined tally of fully electric, plug-in, and hybrid passenger cars came to 10,391 vehicles, a fifth more than in August 2025. That lifted the eight-month running total for the broader electrified group past 116,000 vehicles, roughly thirty percent above last year’s pace.
Pure electric vehicles on their own have now topped 45,000 units sold since January, more than forty percent above last year’s pace, cementing them as one of the fastest-expanding corners of Portugal’s auto market this year.
If the Portuguese market continues to adopt electric and alternative energy vehicles at this pace, Portugal has the potential to be one of the most prominent EV markets in Europe. For EV firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) looking to expand internationally, such sales numbers present an attractive pitch for entry into that market at some point in the future.
