Dodge Unveils EV Versions of Charger Muscle Car

Dodge has unveiled electrified versions of the iconic Charger muscle car. The Stellantis brand will offer two battery-powered iterations of the Dodge Charger that provide drivers with the power of a massive V8 engine without the associated pollution. Given the Charger’s place in America’s muscle-car culture, the launch of electrified versions is a sign that the space is increasingly adapting to electric cars.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are a feasible solution to the transport industry’s massive greenhouse-gas emission dilemma. Transportation is responsible for nearly a third of greenhouse-gas emissions in the United States, because the overwhelming majority of road, water and air vehicles use fossil fuels. While effectively replacing ships and airplanes with electric versions will undoubtedly be challenging (or maybe even impossible with current technology), electric vehicles are already a viable and available transportation option. Replacing an internal combustion engine with a rechargeable battery pack and electric motor eliminates emissions at the tailpipe, making BEVs a great means of cutting tailpipe emissions across the entire transportation space.

Like most major vehicle manufacturers and brands, Dodge parent company Stellantis is also adopting electric-vehicle technology. Production of the electric Dodge Charger will occur at the Stellantis factory in Windsor, Ontario, with the facility switching between producing EVs and conventional petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles based on consumer demand.

The two- and four-door electric Dodges are called Charger Daytona after the Florida-based Nascar runway and will feature two different powertrains. The larger powertrain can deliver up to 670 horsepower and has an acceleration of 0 to 60 miles in only 3.3 seconds, while the second has 496 horsepower and an acceleration of 0 to 60 miles in 4.7 seconds. Both versions will feature Dodge’s Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust to produce the V8’s telltale roar. According to Dodge, the high-performance electric Charger will be the fastest and most powerful muscle car on the globe at launch.

Dodge will continue producing the gas-powered Charger alongside the electric iterations as it already holds a decent market share in the muscle-car segment. However, these versions won’t feature the massive Hemi V8 engine. When Stellantis first announced that it would halt production of the fossil fuel-powered Challengers and Chargers last year, it seemed like the thundering muscle cars were at the beginning of their final decline.

However, Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis hinted at gas-powered versions of the muscle cars that would endure the brand’s decision to electrify its lineup. Kuniskis noted signs of the gas version of the popular automobile living on were always there and that the plan was always to retain some old-school versions of the muscle cars.

For companies that operate entirely in the EV space, such as QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS), the focus is on developing models that will lure customers away from legacy automakers and create brand loyalty.
