China Publishes New Testing Standards for Electric Vehicle Batteries

Recent reports from Chinese media have revealed that China has published new testing standards for electric vehicle batteries. The details outlined in the document cover implementation requirements for an EV battery standard that specifies the battery health readings for passenger electric cars in the light-duty class.

These new standards set a narrow 5% error limit and could go a long way toward making drivers more trusting of EV battery health readings. The standards cap the difference between measured battery health and energy status findings and the readings shown on EV display systems at 5%.

They also set up reference levels for measuring EV battery durability using vehicle mileage and age. The Standardization Administration of China (SAC) and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) aided in the development of GB/T 46991.1-2025, the standard for measuring EV battery health.

It mostly applies to passenger EVs in the light-duty class but hasn’t been classified as a mandatory safety regulation for electric vehicle makers operating in the country. One of the more notable aspects of the new requirements is the push for more accuracy when displaying battery health information to vehicle owners.

According to the recently released documents, State of Available Energy (SOCE) is the ratio between available energy in a brand-new electric vehicle battery and a battery’s available energy. State of Charge (SOC), on the other hand, is defined as the amount of energy left in an electric vehicle’s battery during operation.

As per the newly released standards, SOCE is a representation of a battery’s long-term capacity retention. They will compel automakers to ensure the deviation between real-world values and SOCE values shown on the vehicle display does not surpass 5%, establishing a reference for comparing an EV’s measured capacity with battery health information on internal vehicle displays.

The updated standard also covers energy consumed for anything but normal driving, converting energy used to operate accessories or power vehicle systems during parking hours into ‘Virtual Mileage’. This allows drivers to measure non-driving energy use in distance units.

Similarly, the standard caps the relative deviation between measured results and displayed information at 3% to ensure drivers get an accurate representation of the energy their cars use outside of normal driving conditions.

China revealed the standards amidst nationwide efforts to develop appropriate standards for electric vehicle battery safety, quality, and recycling. With issues relating to EV battery range and durability acting as one of the primary barriers to EV adoption, improving EV battery health will go a long way toward boosting EV adoption.

Analysts may be wondering whether the battery health testing standards set by China could eventually form a global benchmark that even American firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) start referencing in their own operations.
