Buyer’s Checklist When Shopping for an Electric Vehicle

It’s all about green, renewable energy these days. While fossil energy has certainly brought us far, it does more harm than good for the environment. Electric cars are without a doubt the most mainstream representation of green energy right now. If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint, EVs are the way to go: they run on electricity and have zero emissions. However, buying an electric car is an entirely different process from buying a conventional car. Here are some of the things you will have to consider before going green;

What are your driving habits? Electric vehicles have an average range of around 181 miles, but some models can exceed 300 miles. If most of your trips are from home to work and vice versa and average around 24 miles, an EV will be suitable for you. However, if you need to drive more than 124 miles a day up steep roads, you may have to stick to an internal combustion engine vehicle. Make sure you keep your driving needs and habits in mind while choosing an EV.

Charging the EV. Unfortunately, electric vehicles do not have a nationwide system of charging stations. However, there are public charging outlets for EV owners to charge their cars while in public, so make sure whether there are charging stations within reasonable range of where you live. Most electric vehicle makers include the option of an EV charging unit that can be mounted at your home by a licensed electrical contractor, but this may not work if you do not have a garage. You can also use a standard outlet to charge the car but this can take up to 24 hours.

After charge range refers to how far you can travel after a recharge. While gas stations are fairly widespread, there aren’t that many public EV charging locations out there, so you’ll have to plan out your journeys. Your EV will come with a ‘Range Remaining’ display which is a distance-based estimate based on your most recent driving patterns. If you usually have relatively short drives, the display will give a longer range while if the last 15 miles or so were uphill, you will have a lower range.

Battery range loss. Most electric vehicles are powered by lithium-ion battery packs which lose useful capacity and power over time. An EV battery pack will lose about 20% of its original maximum range after five years of regular use, depending on your usage. Longer drives on relatively difficult terrain will increase range loss over time as the battery will charge and discharge more.

Purchasing an electric vehicle is a decision that requires plenty of thought and preparation, especially regarding charging the vehicle. However, the government and EV makers are constantly working to create a nationwide grid of EV charging stations and to make owning an electric vehicle affordable. It is probable that firms like NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO) are putting their weight behind this push to make charging an EV as effortless as refueling a conventional car.
