Biden Roots for EVs in Michigan, Goes on Test-Drive in EV Truck

Several countries around the world are looking to gradually replace their gasoline-powered fleets with zero-emission electric vehicles (“EVs”). Since he began his campaign, President Joe Biden has thrown his weight behind the green energy cause. Shortly after he was sworn in as president, Biden pledged to have 500,000 public charging stations installed across the country, and his ambitious infrastructure plan calls for substantial investment in zero-emission vehicles. On May 18, 2021, Biden got to test drive Ford’s new electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck at a Ford testing site.

Given the love Biden has shown for the nascent EV industry, it is no surprise Ford let him test drive its new electric pickup. And according to Automotive News, he was the first person, except for Ford Motor Co. employees, to drive the F-150 Lightning. The president was given a tour of the Dearborn-based Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center before giving a short speech where he called electric vehicles the future of the automotive industry.

Once he was behind the wheel of the pickup truck in his classic aviator shades, he drove the EV around an empty parking lot, putting the camouflaged EV through its paces. He told reporters on site that the car felt great, and when asked if he would buy one for himself, he said that he would. Although the White House and Ford had been in communication for weeks, their talks did not include Biden test driving one of their electric vehicles. However, once he made the request, Ford scrambled to get an EV on-site and brought in a working prototype.

In his speech, Biden said that although China was undoubtedly leading the EV race, the United States needed to move fast to create its own EV ecosystem. The question, he said, was whether America would rely on other countries or whether it would build electric vehicles and the batteries that power them itself. He hopes to make this a reality via his $2 trillion American Jobs Plan, which would provide $174 billion for investment in electric vehicles.

Biden’s infrastructure plan for the country would see funds directed towards fixing 20,000 miles of roads and 10,000 bridges on top of raising corporate taxes and addressing both climate change and racial equality in the country, among other things. It is a once-in-a-generation investment in the United States and America, he says.

Such support from the top-most office of the federal government gives sector players such as Net Element (NASDAQ: NETE) a favorable environment within which to supercharge its plans with regards to electrifying the vehicles on the nation’s roads.
