Formula E has quietly turned its racetracks into testing labs for the technology showing up in electric cars sold to ordinary drivers. Jaguar, Nissan, Porsche, Mahindra, Yamaha, and Stellantis all field teams in the all-electric series, and Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds says the series functions as a proving ground for road-car engineering.
He pointed to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo as an example, calling it the brand’s most powerful road-legal model to date despite running entirely on batteries, with engineering that traces back to Porsche’s work on the circuit.
Dodds described a method that Jaguar developed for beaming wireless software updates to I-Pace owners straight from their phones, work that likewise grew out of its time on the Formula E track. The championship has grown alongside the industry it feeds: when Formula E launched twelve years ago, worldwide EV sales sat at just a few hundred thousand, and the batteries back then were so weak that teams needed a second car mid-race to reach the finish.
Global EV sales are on track to hit roughly 22 million units this year. The research firm BloombergNEF expects that figure to nearly double by the end of the decade, reaching somewhere between 35 million and 40 million annually. The series has followed a similar curve: it launched without any fans or broadcast viewers, and now claims an audience of roughly 420 million, with televised viewership topping half a billion.
Current-generation electric cars can now reach highway speeds almost instantly and exceed 200 miles per hour. Unlike companies that adopted sustainability commitments after the fact, Dodds said Formula E built its environmental mission in from the start. That mission sat alongside two other founding goals: building a competitive racing league and pushing the shift away from gasoline-powered cars.
It holds B Corp status, the only sport to do so. The designation is given to organizations that clear a high bar on social and environmental practices. Race weekends avoid diesel generators in favor of hydrogenated vegetable oil, cut out single-use plastics, and power the cars with renewable electricity. Engineers designed the newest car so nearly every part can eventually be recycled or reused.
Dodds said he resists setting rigid long-term targets for the series, arguing that a sector evolving this fast rewards flexibility over fixed, long-range plans. Given how far the sport has come from its improvised early seasons, predicting how much further it can go is genuinely difficult, he said, especially with the wider EV market still accelerating.
Who knows? The coming years could one day see electric vehicle firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) testing their latest innovative features or models on Formula E racetracks!
