VW Group Marks Production of 5 Millionth EV Drive Unit

Six years after producing its first battery-electric vehicle, Volkswagen Group has now manufactured its five millionth electric drive unit globally, underscoring the automaker’s rapid expansion in battery-electric vehicle powertrain manufacturing. The milestone reinforces VW’s standing among the world’s largest producers of EV drive systems as electrification accelerates across its brand portfolio.

Production facilities across four locations deliver this volume: Győr in Hungary, Kassel in Germany, Tianjin in China, and Zuffenhausen in Germany. These plants operate as an integrated manufacturing network that enables the company to develop and industrialize electric powertrains at commercial scale. Volkswagen Group Components’ Kassel facility alone boosted electric drive output by roughly 24% year-over-year in 2025, manufacturing over 850,000 battery-electric cars.

The APP550 electric drive is largely responsible for powering VW’s highest-volume electric models, including the ID vehicle family, Škoda Enyaq, and CUPRA Tavascan. Kassel alone has manufactured one million APP550 units to date. APP550 delivers approximately 20% lower energy consumption, 75% additional torque, and 40% greater power output while still matching its predecessor’s dimensions.

Series production versions generate up to 240 kilowatts and 560 newton-meters of torque, yielding extended range, quicker acceleration, and reduced noise. They can be combined with oil and water cooling systems to optimize temperature regulation without requiring an additional pump.

Pulse inverter development represents VW’s strategic push toward greater technological control. The company developed its first in-house pulse inverter, which governs energy flow between battery and motor while directly influencing performance, efficiency, and driving characteristics. This component functions as the electric drive system’s control center.

Board Member for Technology Thomas Schmall said building five million electric drives demonstrates Volkswagen’s leadership in both internal combustion and battery-electric segments. Furthermore, the development of proprietary pulse inverters strengthens the company’s technological independence while ensuring elevated performance and quality standards for customers, he explained. Internal development will enable faster innovation cycles, reduced costs, and decreased reliance on external suppliers as production volumes expand.

Upcoming compact electric models from VW will employ the new inverter technology. Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family includes the ID. Polo, Škoda Epiq, and CUPRA Raval, all utilizing the internally developed APP290 electric motor. Output ranges from 85 kilowatts (116 horsepower) to 166 kilowatts (226 horsepower) using 400-volt architecture. Silicon carbide semiconductors in the inverter minimize energy losses and improve efficiency, translating to longer driving range and enhanced real-world performance particularly in urban and suburban environments.

Reaching five million units positions Volkswagen Group for mass-market electrification’s next phase. Combining production scale with increasingly internalized critical technologies strengthens the automaker’s competitive position globally, particularly across Europe, North America, and other primary EV markets where vertical integration and continuous efficiency improvements provide strategic advantages.

As electrification marches on and companies like VW and Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) register increasing sales, statistics on drivetrains produced will keep reaching new record levels.
