Study Shows Switching to EVs Could Slash Childhood Asthma Prevalence

A recent University of Toronto study has found that replacing gas-powered vehicles with zero-emission electric vehicles (EVs) could significantly reduce the number of childhood asthma cases. The researchers concluded that replacing just 50% of all petrol and diesel cars with EVs could meaningfully cut asthma rates attributed to vehicle exhaust.

Gas-powered cars, which burn fossil fuels, are a major source of both greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Exhaust fumes from these vehicles are linked to nearly one-third of all new childhood asthma cases each year. Previous studies have consistently shown that car exhaust poses a serious public health risk, particularly in densely populated urban areas where pollution levels are higher.

The University of Toronto researchers investigated the link between EV adoption and public health outcomes, focusing on asthma due to its widespread prevalence in the U.S. With around half a million children in the country developing asthma each year, exposure to pollutants like nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, which are common emissions from combustion engines, is a key risk factor.

To measure the impact of EVs on childhood asthma, the researchers compared the number of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales with new pediatric asthma cases across different regions. They found that for every 1,000 new ICE vehicles sold, there was approximately one additional case of childhood asthma.

Their analysis suggests that replacing just 21% of ICE vehicle sales with electric alternatives could be enough to prevent further increases in asthma cases linked to vehicle pollution. However, the percentage required varies depending on population density and the number of existing gas-powered cars in a given area.

In some states, only 7% of vehicle sales would need to be electric to halt rising asthma rates, while others might require up to 42% EV sales to achieve the same effect. Still, the study found that states with larger gas-powered fleets and denser populations would see the greatest health benefits from EV adoption.

The findings highlight the potential of electric vehicles to contribute not only to climate goals but also to improved public health, especially among vulnerable groups like children.

The researchers also note that switching to EVs isn’t the only solution that can reduce the prevalence of internal engine combustion vehicles. Other solutions, such as improving public transit systems and establishing biking infrastructure can boost public health while also improving the quality of air that people breathe.

As those other options are considered, enterprises like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) will continue to provide EVs and fuel-efficient alternatives to the gas-guzzlers which are causing a lot of concern due to their effects on public health and air quality.
