Octopus, BYD Collaborate to Usher in EV and Charging Bundle for Motorists

BYD has teamed up with UK energy supplier Octopus Energy to launch an electric vehicle charging bundle dubbed ‘Power Pack Bundle’ for EV drivers in the United Kingdom. The bundle was unveiled at the energy supplier’s Energy Tech Summit and will cost UK drivers just under $375 every month.

After recently surpassing Tesla as the top EV manufacturer on the globe, Shenzhen, China-based BYD has joined forces with the biggest energy supplier in the UK to introduce a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bundle that will revolutionize electric vehicle ownership across the UK. The bundle includes a bi-directional Zaptec Pro charger, a V2G-ready BYD Dolphin on a lease basis, and smart tariff access with the offer of free home charging.

The smart tariff’s free charging offer would enable EV drivers to cut their yearly household energy bills by around $775 compared to a standard charging tariff, and help them save close to $1,250 compared to the cost of refueling a petrol or diesel car. Furthermore, the vehicle-to-grid technology that’s critical to the charging bundle can help the UK grid reduce its fossil fuel use.

By allowing vehicles to transmit energy from their batteries directly into the grid, V2G essentially turns electric cars into large batteries that can put energy into the grid when electricity demand peaks. Better yet, the technology is designed to be extremely simple to use, leveraging Kraken, a tech platform developed by and for Octopus Energy Group, to fully automate the vehicle-to-grid charging process.

Once an EV driver plugs their leased BYD Dolphin in to charge overnight, Kraken takes over to provide completely free charging for every mile they drive the EV under lease. The BYD Dolphin presents a novel use case for vehicle-to-grid technology as this is the first time this feature has been installed directly into an electric car. If more electric vehicle manufacturers adopt this approach, thousands to hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles could act as tiny power stations in the near to long term.

BYD and Octopus Energy have also teamed up with Motability Operations, the largest leasing company in the UK, to ensure disabled individuals also have access to vehicle-to-grid technology. Octopus Energy Group founder Greg Jackson says bidirectional charging will be revolutionary for both drivers and the country’s electrical grid.

The launch of the Power Pack Bundle marks a major step toward integrating electric vehicles into the broader energy ecosystem. By turning EVs into mobile power sources and automating energy sharing with the grid, solutions like this may ease pressure during peak demand and help reduce fossil fuel use. As more drivers adopt V2G-ready vehicles like the BYD Dolphin and smart tariffs, everyday motorists could become key players in building a cleaner, smarter, and more flexible energy network.

It would be interesting to hear what firms like Massimo Group (NASDAQ: MAMO) say about the feasibility of replicating similar collaborations like that between BYD and Octopus in different markets around the world.
