ZenAuto Says Searches for EVs Grew 172% in the UK

ZenAuto, a major car leasing firm in the United Kingdom, says that its research shows that between September last year and the start of this year, the number of motorists searching its website for electric vehicles (“EVs”) had soared by 172%. In the same period, similar searches on Google reached a five-year high. The company reveals that this surge can be largely attributed to two major factors: the fuel shortages that hit the country last year, and the UN climate change summit (COP26), which was hosted in Glasgow towards the end of the year. According to poll conducted by ZenAuto,…

Volkswagen Determined to Double EV Sales in China

Despite being the world’s largest vehicle market, China has been notoriously difficult for Western carmakers to penetrate. The electric vehicle (“EV”) revolution has presented an attractive opportunity, allowing carmakers to enter the Chinese market with relatively good results. Volkswagen AG, for instance, partnered with Shanghai, China-based SAIC Motor and FAW Group in Changchun, Jilin, China to build the ID electric vehicle series. The German automaker is looking to double sales in China this year after selling 70,625 of its ID electric cars in 2021. This was nearly 10,000 EVs short of Volkswagen’s goal to sell 80,000 to 100,000 electric vehicles…

Mercedes Benz Unveils Animal-Free EV Model

The 2022 Consumer Electronics Show was every car enthusiast’s dream. Running from Jan. 5–8, 2022, the show featured some of the latest technologies different companies had to offer. With electric vehicles (“EVs”) being among the most talked-about technology right now, they featured heavily during the show. Several countries across the world are looking to reduce their carbon emissions, and tackling transportation is the first step; passenger vehicles and light-duty trucks accounted for 29% of total carbon emissions in 2019. By replacing fossil fuel cars with zero-emission electric vehicles, we can significantly cut down on our greenhouse gas emissions. One company,…

Oregon Doubles EV Rebates for Low-Income Households

In order to entice more people to switch to electric vehicles, the state of Oregon has revised its EV rebates program and doubled the amount of money that motorists are eligible to receive once they buy either a used or new electric vehicle. This move puts the state among the top in the country in terms of rebates issued to buyers of electric vehicles. The Charge Ahead Program covers households whose combined income is in the range of $51,000 to $251,000, subject to how many people are in each household. Previously, the households that fall within this annual income bracket…

US Registers Record Sales of Hybrid EVs

Battery electric vehicles (“BEVs”) are all the rage right now. While electric vehicles (“EVs”) may not be filling up American roads just yet, most automakers have plans to electrify their lineups, and at least 23% of Americans are considering buying an electric car as their next vehicle. With the Unites States looking to cut its carbon emissions in a bid to arrest climate change, battery-electric cars are poised to take over our roads. They do not use fossil fuels and produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, making them perfect for a carbon-neutral economy. But while everyone has had their eyes…

Sony Announces Plans to Start EV Firm

The next generation of vehicles will be nothing like we’ve ever seen before. With several countries looking to cut their carbon emissions, it looks like the fossil fuel vehicles that have dominated our roads for over a century will meet their end soon. Over the next few decades, those vehicles will be replaced with zero-emission electric vehicles (“EVs”), a relatively new technology that is poised to take over the vehicular transportation sector. Interestingly, this revolution hasn’t been limited to just automakers; companies outside the automotive space have shown plenty of interest in electric vehicles. In a surprising move, Japanese multinational…

EVs Commanded 65% Market Share in Norway in 2021

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) may be among the most popular emerging technologies, but we are still a long way from mass adoption. Although several countries around the world have pledged to transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to zero-emission electric cars in a bid to cut their greenhouse gas emissions, EVs still make a very small percentage of total vehicle sales. This is mainly due to their high upfront costs as well as limited public charging infrastructure. Norway, however, is leading the charge on EV adoption. Although the Scandinavian country makes for a small market in terms of raw numbers, especially when…

Why the 12-Volt Battery Is Unlikely to Disappear as EVs Take Root

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) are an elegant evolution of the traditional fossil fuel cars we are used to. Rather than a noisy combustion engine, electric cars rely on a whisper-quiet electric motor coupled with a lithium-ion battery for power and movement. Eliminating the combustion engine and the fossil fuels that power it makes EVs extremely clean because they do not produce carbon emissions at the tailpipe. However, did you know that EVs retain a component from their fossil fuel counterparts that plays an extremely important role? Alongside the high-voltage battery pack installed at the bottom, most electrified vehicles also feature a…

Carmakers Prepare for Partly Online 2022 CES Show

It has been nearly two years since the coronavirus pandemic first broke onto the scene and threw the entire globe into disarray. Faced with the threat of a deadly virus, countries shut down their borders and issued lockdown orders that saw most companies either reduce or halt their operations altogether. Gatherings of any kind were out of the question, thus relegating the 2021 Consumer Electronic Show (“CES”) to 100% virtual attendance. Now that the 2022 CES is approaching and the end of the pandemic is nowhere in sight, this year’s show will barely feature in-person attendance as well. Still, automakers…

New Analysis Shows EVs Less EcoFriendly to Make Prove Sustainability Credentials in a Year

Electric vehicles (“EVs”) are poised to play a significant role in transportation as numerous countries around the world strive to cut down their greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike conventional diesel-powered vehicles, electric cars rely on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and an electric motor rather than an internal combustion engine. By eliminating fossil fuels, electric vehicles produce minimal emissions at the tailpipe, making them the perfect vehicle for a green economy. According to a new study, however, electric vehicles aren’t as carbon free as many people may think. The analysis found that compared to diesel- and petrol-powered cars, producing electric vehicles is…
