How to Retain EV’s Range During Extreme Cold Weather

There’s a learning curve when it comes to using electric cars. Rather than the internal combustion engines we are all used to, electric vehicles (“EV”) use rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs and electric motors to generate power and torque. The size of the battery pack will determine your EV’s range, as well as how much energy is stored when the vehicle is at rest and how much is fed to the motors once the car is in motion. With large parts of the country capable of reaching extremely low temperatures in the winter, new drivers will have to learn how to maximize range in extremely cold weather.

The batteries that power electric cars rely on chemical reactions in the liquid electrolytes in each individual cell to create energy. When temperatures fall, however, this chemical reaction becomes slower, reducing the battery’s power output. In such temperatures, an unplugged EV can lose up to 20% of its range.

Since you will also have to let the battery warm up before you plug the car in, it will also take longer to charge. Furthermore, keeping the cabin warm can consume significant energy and ultimately reduce your range. According to a study by AAA, using your EV’s electric heater in cold weather can cut down the car’s range by as much as 41%.

So how can you retain your electric vehicle’s range during extremely cold weather? For starters, Jake Fisher, the senior director of auto testing at “Consumer Reports,” advises EV buyers who live in colder climates to buy EVs with double the range they need for their daily driving needs. This significantly reduces their chances of running out of energy in the middle of nowhere. Even if cold weather and air conditioning cut down your range by up to 50%, you’ll still have enough energy left in the tank to get back home in case of a cold snap.

Plenty of electric vehicle models on the market already have more than 200 miles of battery range. And with automakers such as Mullen Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: MULN) poised to significantly increase their selections of electric vehicles, you won’t have to struggle to find an EV that suits your driving needs.

Once you’ve found your vehicle, you want to keep it away from the cold as much as possible. Park it in a garage overnight if you have access to one. If you don’t have a garage, invest in a car cover or a car shelter to protect your car from the snow. Finally, charge your EV regularly, making sure the battery never goes below 20%, and always leave your home with a fully charged battery.
