GM to Install Thousands of EV Chargers in Out-of-Town Locations

General Motors’ plans to install up to 40,000 EV charging stations throughout all rural areas across America have begun. This is timely, as General Motors intends to completely electrify its fleet by 2035. Currently, 43,000 such charging stations are in place, so General Motors’ plan would almost double the already available number of charging stations.

It’s important to keep in mind that these are level 2 chargers, which are a little slower albeit still quite effective as opposed to the faster level 3 chargers, which are known to quickly charge an electric battery to 80% of its capacity in a matter of minutes. The chargers will be situated in public places, including parks and sporting events, as well as shopping centers where people can park their cars for a while. Additionally, the chargers will include J1772 charging plugs, which are standard in the industry and compatible with almost all EV models, not just GM models. Other models, including Tesla, will be able to use the chargers with the aid of adapters.

In America today, coastal regions such as California and New York are where the majority of EV sales are recorded. Similarly, EV charging stations are more commonly placed in the cities and also on the major roads or streets where people commute to and from between cities more often. General Motors is collaborating with dealers, many of whom reside in remote regions far from the coastal regions, to put the chargers in places where they are typically lacking.

As of now, 1,000 dealers have already committed to putting up to 10 chargers in each location. The chargers will be spread out throughout the neighborhood where the dealership is located. These dealers would therefore assist in deciding where to install the chargers in the neighborhoods. General Motors is collaborating with Flo to help with the building and installation of the chargers. The Ultium brand, which General Motors uses for its EV and charging initiatives, together with the dealership name that was charged with the sponsorship of the charging area, will all be displayed on the chargers.

The majority of those who own electric cars actually charge their cars at home. But there is a widely held belief that installing public chargers is essential to promoting EV sales so buyers can be confident that there are other charging stations available and that they will not be concerned about driving their EVs away from their homes.

Maintenance will be handled by local contractors. The chargers will also be toughly constructed to protect them from misuse and theft, which are the two main reasons for charger failure.

As more charging facilities are installed in public places, the sales of startups such as Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) are likely to skyrocket as the reluctance in the members of the public dissipates.
