Electric Vehicles Dominate Latest World Car Awards

Zero-emission vehicles have all but dominated the conversation in the automotive sector for the past couple of years. As extreme weather events continue to ravage parts of the world, several territories have resolved to replace the fossil fuel vehicles on their roads with electric cars and reduce their carbon emissions.

Carmakers have taken to electrification in a big way, pouring billions of dollars into electric cars and pledging to invest even more over the coming years. Even though EVs still make up less than 1% of all vehicles, plenty of electric vehicle models on the road debuted to rave reviews. Furthermore, they have continued to win over drivers because of their innovative designs, interactive user interfaces and impressive performance. As such, it isn’t surprising that electric vehicles stole the show during the 2022 World Car Awards.

Launched in January 2004, the awards recognize vehicles that are sold in at least five countries for achievement in various categories. For the entirety of the event’s existence, it has awarded internal combustion engine vehicles. This year, however, electric vehicles were here to compete. The Audi e-Tron GT, for instance, nabbed the World Performance Car title while the Mercedez Benz EQS was awarded the World Luxury Car title.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5, which was the first electric car to feature vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology that allows EV owners to charge electronic devices straight from the EV’s battery pack, won three titles.

EVs use a floor-mounted, lithium-ion battery pack rather than an internal combustion engine. On top of giving EVs a lower center of gravity, which reduces the chances of rolling over, installing a battery along the bottom of a vehicle opens up a wide variety of design options.

For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a roomy interior, plenty of legroom and a design that the Driven expert Bryce Gaton describes as “futuristic.” It also has a variety of driver-assist features, satellite navigation coupled with live traffic updates, and wireless phone charging among others.

The Ioniq 5’s vehicle to load technology also allows owners to plug battery-powered devices into the car and charge directly from the EV’s lithium-ion battery pack. These and a multitude of other features impressed the panel of judges and allowed the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to walk away with three titles.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 had an especially tough fight in the World Car of the Year category as it was up against the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which won the Consumer Report’s award for the Electric Vehicle Top Pick earlier this year, and the Kia EV, which was crowned the 2022 Car of the Year at the Car of the Year Awards.

The way things are going, it looks as if the future of electric vehicle models made by entities that aren’t encumbered by a history of making ICE vehicles, such as Fisker Inc. (NYSE: FSR), will be brighter since these companies come with a clean slate on which they can innovate their vehicles unburdened by history or tradition.
