EVs Poised to Become Commonplace

Although automakers have sold millions of electric cars at this point, EVs are still an oddity on American roads, especially in nonurbanized regions. They make up a small percentage of vehicle sales, with the bulk of EV sales happening in states such as California and urban areas with more high-income earners and a higher density of public chargers. This disparity is primarily because of range anxiety and the high costs associated with buying an electric car. Even so, the U.S. government is keen on cutting emissions from the transportation sector by steadily phasing out internal combustion engine (ICE) cars via…

Michigan Automakers Hope Electric Muscle Cars Will Retain Enthusiasts

Even though automakers have pledged to invest billions of dollars over the next decade to develop new lines of electric cars, not every driver is willing to go electric due to a couple of factors. Price and range anxiety are currently the chief barriers to electric vehicle adoption in the country. Furthermore, electric vehicle companies will have a hard time breaking into the select group of drivers who prize muscle cars for their performance. Electric cars may have significantly greater torque and starting speeds, but conventional muscle cars still outshine them in numerous other regards. In Detroit, Michigan, automakers are…

Why Rivian’s Q2 $1.7B Loss Shouldn’t Worry Investors

Amazon-backed startup Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) recently announced that it had recorded a loss of $1.7 billion in Q2 2022 amid efforts to ramp up electric vehicle production and increase deliveries. The automaker’s losses for the second quarter of 2022 were more than double the $580 million it lost in the second quarter of 2021. During a call with investors, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said that the Irvine, California-based company was unable to effectively use its production line for a lot of the second quarter. He said that due to component supply issues, Rivian has been unable to run…

Consumer Reports Survey Reveals Latest Concerns of Prospective EV Drivers

If the U.S. government has its way, electric vehicles will steadily replace fossil-fuel-powered cars over the next couple of decades to curb carbon emissions and arrest climate change. By relying on a rechargeable battery pack rather than an internal combustion engine, electric cars minimize the use of dirty fuels such as gasoline and eliminate tailpipe emissions. However, more than a decade after the first electric vehicle hit the roads, EV adoption is still staggeringly low. Ask anyone who thought about switching to an EV but ultimately didn’t and they will tell you factors such as super-high prices and insufficient public-charging…

Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory Makes Its Millionth EV

Ever since it first launched the Roadster more than a decade ago, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) has consistently been the most prolific electric vehicle maker in the world. Reports show that the American EV company has sold nearly two million electric vehicles since its inception, with 32% of the units sold since 2016 being purchased in the first half of 2021. From late 2018 to 2019, Tesla began construction of a Gigafactory in China and started producing Model 3s at the site with an initial production goal of 250,000 EVs per year. Tesla recently announced that the Shanghai Gigafactory had…

Pole-Mounted Chargers Could Spur EV Adoption

One of the most significant challenges America’s nascent electric vehicle industry faces is insufficient and often unreliable charging stations. Although a majority of EV drivers charge their vehicles overnight at home, most experts agree that a widespread network of reliable charging stations is needed to support mass EV adoption. As it stands, America’s public charging infrastructure is patchy and often unreliable, leading to high rates of range anxiety among drivers. This range anxiety presents a  significant challenge to widespread electric vehicle adoption and could potentially prevent the United States from reaching its carbon emission goals. A Massachusetts city has now…

Important Things Motorists Need to Know About EV Tires

For the average driver, switching from a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle to a battery electric vehicle (BEV) will be a big change. Since the vehicles are powered by rechargeable battery packs rather than internal combustion engines, battery electric vehicles produce zero carbon emissions at the tailpipe. However these carbon savings come at a cost: electric vehicles are so fundamentally different from regular cars that even the most experienced driver will have to go through a learning curve before they can efficiently operate their new EV. Electric vehicle tires, for starters, are a different beast from the tires used by conventional vehicles.…

How Consumer Behavior Changes as EVs Take Root

The automotive industry is currently in the midst of a major revolution as the number of electric vehicles on the road steadily increases. Rising electric vehicle adoption has led to a shift in consumer behavior, meaning automakers and car dealerships that wish to succeed will have to evolve their sales, marketing and customer experiences. So how exactly is EV adoption affecting consumer behavior? For starters, plenty of drivers are no longer checking how many miles per gallon a car can travel or looking for sports packages. They are instead researching EV battery range, referring to how far a vehicle can…

Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles Regain Ground Among Motorists

Plug-in hybrids are a great transition vehicle for people who aren’t completely comfortable with switching to fully electric vehicles. They come equipped with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, making it possible for drivers to power their cars through either electricity or fuel. This significantly increases range and alleviates a problem that prevents many drivers from ditching their gasoline-powered cars for EVs: range anxiety. Over the past couple of months, there has been a surge in plug-in hybrid EV sales, partly due to soaring gas prices that have made running conventional cars quite pricey. Wards Intelligence estimates that…

How EVs Can Survive Extreme Weather Conditions

Electric vehicles are in an entirely different class compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Rather than an internal combustion engine, EVs draw their power from rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs. This grants them several advantages over conventional cars, including eliminating emissions at the tailpipe; however, it also results in cons that typically don’t affect traditional cars. One of them is the effect extreme weather conditions can have on range. Each electric vehicle battery is capable of holding enough charge to cover a certain number of miles. Ideally, an EV with an estimated 200-mile range could drive 200 miles on a single…
