Motorcycle Manufacturers Unveils Low-Cost Electric Scooter for Urban Use

Not many people think of scooters and motorcycles when the subject of electric vehicles (“EVs”) comes up, but these two-wheeled mobility tools have witnessed a transformation as manufacturers venture into the EV space. Yamaha (OTC: YAMHF) is one of those manufacturers that now offers electric motorcycles as well as electric scooters. The Japanese manufacturer’s newest offering is a scooter that looks similar to the Vesper. Named e-Vino, the scooter is intended for urban use because of its small size as well as its limited range. The pint-sized scooter weighs only 149.9 pounds. This weight bumps up to 163 pounds when…

GM Hiring Staff for Ohio EV Battery Factory

Late last year, General Motors (“GM”) made an announcement that would propel it into the relatively young EV industry. Through a new, equally owned joint venture company called Ultium Cells LLC, GM and LG Chem planned to build a battery gigafactory in Ohio with an annual capacity of 30 GWh; the two firms were investing up to a total of $2.3 billion to build the factory. During the announcement, GM stated that the new gigafactory would create more than 1,100 new employment opportunities. Close to a year later, the automaker is making good on that statement and has started hiring.…

Bentley Plans to Make Only Electric Vehicles by 2030

The United Kingdom was the first major economy to pass a net-zero emissions law, and the country plans on bringing all greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. Several automakers have announced plans to reduce and ultimately stop the production of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles; recently, British automaker Bentley announced what appears to be the most ambitious plan of all. The luxury carmaker has pledged to stop making all fossil-fueled cars by 2030 in favor of all-electric electric vehicles (“EVs”) with zero carbon-exhaust emissions. Initially, Bentley will stop the production of internal-combustion engine-powered vehicles within the next…

Tapping into Investment Opportunities in EV Industry

The electric vehicle (“EV”) industry represents a significant opportunity for investors. Transportation accounts for 28.2% of all greenhouse emissions, and several governments are set to phase out traditional vehicles over the next two decades. As such, the nascent electric vehicle sector is set to enjoy immense growth in the coming years. So how can investors get a slice of the pie? Invest in established EV makers. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), the most prominent EV manufacturer, currently has a market cap of more than $400 billion, which some say is overvalued. Still, the innovative company is the dominant player in the…

How Energy Companies Can Support EV Popularization

Despite its relative novelty, the electric vehicle (“EV”) industry has made tremendous strides towards cleaning up our roads. Transportation accounts for approximately 28.2% of greenhouse gases worldwide, and several governments are planning on phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles in favor of electric vehicles over the next decade or two to address this. Not only do EVs run on clean, renewable energy, they also produce zero emissions at the tailpipe, making them the perfect vehicle for a net-zero economy. However, we are still a long way from widespread EV adoption. Most consumers are put off by the sometimes very high…

Ultra-Fast Carbon Electrodes Set to Revolutionize EV Battery Performance

As the world looks toward a future free of carbon emissions, it has become increasingly clear that the transportation sector needs a major overhaul. The sector is responsible for a significant proportion of greenhouse gases produced worldwide, and plenty of countries have vowed to replace fossil-fuel-powered vehicles with battery-powered electric vehicles (“EVs”) over the next decade. Just barely a decade old, the EV industry has been consistently working on improving battery technology to make the vehicles more efficient, to lower costs, and to increase battery life. Presently, EV batteries deteriorate and lose their range over time, with the rate of…

Steps to Ease Shopping for a Plug-In Car

If you’ve been thinking about buying a plug-in car to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels, you aren’t alone. The past few years have seen an increasing number of consumers with interest in battery electric vehicles (“EVs”) and plug-in vehicles that don’t rely solely on gasoline. However, while conventional vehicles mostly focus on hardware, plug-ins employ software as well, making the shopping experience quite different. If you’ve never driven such a vehicle, you’ll want to identify some key differences between EVs and more conventional autos. Apart from the different terminology used with plug-in cars, there are some considerations you wouldn't…

Four Promising Ways to Pair EVs, Renewable Energy

As the need for clean, renewable energy becomes more urgent, electric vehicles (“EVs”) have emerged as among the cleanest forms of transportation. In the United States, transportation accounts for 30% of all greenhouse emissions, and tackling the issue may ultimately reduce up to a third of the total carbon Americans emit into the atmosphere. Unlike conventional vehicles, EVs are powered by electricity instead of fossil fuels, and they produce no emissions at the tailpipe. However, all these benefits are rendered null if EVs are primarily charged with fossil-fuel-based generators. A Chinese study found that electric vehicles can contribute two to…

Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) Commits $6.5 Million to Building EV Charging Stations in London

The UK is one of numerous countries that have pledged to phase out internal combustion-powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles (“EVs”). In summer 2019, then Prime Minister Theresa May signed into law the groundbreaking target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, one factor that has consistently stood in the way of widespread EV adoption, especially in the less-affluent boroughs of London, is poor charging infrastructure. To help combat this, global ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) has pledged to invest more than £5m in public, electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. Uber’s analysis shows that the concentration of public EV…

Why Nickel Is Unsung Hero in EV Batteries

Battery-powered electric vehicles (“EVs") are slowly but surely becoming the dominant force on the roads. EVs run on clean energy and produce minimal emissions, making them the perfect vehicle for a net-zero economy. Most, if not all, battery electric vehicles use lithium-ion or li-ion batteries. In fact, most consumer electronics, as well as home solar storage solutions, also use lithium-ion batteries. However, not many people know that nickel plays a role in the production and operation of such batteries. The first Toyota Prius hit the market back in the mid-1990s, partly powered by a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery. Long used…
