BMW and E.ON have launched what they claim is Germany’s first vehicle-to-grid product to actually reach the market, giving drivers a concrete way to monetize their parked electric vehicles while competitors are still making promises. Participants stand to earn up to $850 (€720) annually by letting their battery push electricity back toward the grid while plugged in at home.
According to BMW, the earnings cover roughly 8,700 miles of charging per year, enough to eliminate fuel costs for most daily commuters. The arrangement went live following a September 2025 preview announcement.
Rather than simply charging in one direction, compatible vehicles can route power three ways: back toward the grid during demand spikes, into the home to offset electricity bills, or straight to external devices. Battery management runs automatically in the background, keeping stored energy within safe thresholds so participation does not erode long-term range or cell health.
Drivers interested in the program will need a Neue Klasse BMW with sixth-generation eDrive technology, the iX3 being the first eligible model. A dedicated bidirectional Wallbox manages two-way current flow, while an E.ON smart tariff and household meter upgrade round out the setup. To pull in early adopters, the first 100 sign-ups on the E.ON tariff collect an $820 reduction off Wallbox costs, provided they drive an iX3.
The tariff structure will be fixed rather than floating rates, protecting participants from electricity price swings across both home consumption and vehicle charging. Each kilowatt-hour sent back to the network will return $0.47 in compensation, and drivers will be able to monitor charge status, set target levels, and track real-time earnings directly from the My BMW app.
E.ON Germany CEO Filip Thon says the commercial launch represents a genuine shift in how households engage with the energy system. He notes that it gives private customers their first real opportunity to act as grid contributors rather than passive electricity users.
Meanwhile, Octopus Energy has moved into Germany with a competing package combining vehicle leasing, home charging hardware, and integrated energy plans, though that service was not scheduled to go live until sometime in 2026. Mercedes-Benz has confirmed two-way charging across its next-generation 2026 models with accompanying service infrastructure, but those vehicles are not yet in showrooms.
Wind and solar generation fluctuates with conditions, leaving gaps between what the network produces and what consumers draw. Vehicles connected at home can absorb surplus electricity and return it during shortfalls, smoothing those imbalances without expensive backup generation. For German households already navigating elevated energy costs, clawing back several hundred dollars each year through a car sitting in the driveway represents a tangible change in the real-world cost of going electric.
Other EV makers like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) that have plans of penetrating the EU market, and countries like Germany in particular, may have to study how motorists respond to the V2G packages currently available in the country and assess how to come up with their own innovations to attract buyers.
