Three Occurrences That Stood Out in 2023 for Tesla

This year has been an eventful year for American electric vehicle carmaker Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA). The pioneering EV maker provided investors with an impressive 100% return on stock, but its performance in 2024 is still uncertain, especially since Tesla’s heavily traded stocks often go through outsize moves. Sweeping price cuts across the electric-vehicle industry have had a considerable effect on Tesla’s margins. While EV makers such as Tesla leveraged their monopoly to sell their EVs at premium prices for the past decade, increasingly intense competition seems to be putting an end to the era of premium electric cars. Tesla…

Germany’s Abrupt End to EV Subsidies Hits Tesla, Other Automakers

Tesla and a slew of automakers recently suffered a major blow in the European market after the German government abruptly ended the country’s electric-vehicle subsidies. With the German coalition government facing an increasingly dire budget crisis, government officials announced the end of the “environmental bonus” program several weeks earlier than planned. Like several other nations, Germany plans on electrifying its transport network to cut down greenhouse emissions and mitigate climate change. However, electric vehicles are so expensive that the majority of consumers cannot afford to purchase them outright, especially without the aid of government subsidies and incentives. The German government…

Tesla Teams Up with Uber to Give Drivers $3,000 Discount for EV Purchases

Tesla has announced a partnership with rideshare company Uber that will see the Texas-based EV maker offer discounts of up to $3,000 to Uber drivers. According to the deal, Uber drivers will be able to purchase the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 at discounted prices directly from Tesla on Uber’s vehicle marketplace platform. The recent partnership is one of the many electrification endeavors undertaken by fleets in the United States. While Uber doesn’t own the majority of the vehicles used on its rideshare platform, the company is committed to facilitating electric- vehicle adoption among its drivers. Partnering with Tesla…

Why EV Charging Networks Have Reliability Problems

Unreliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a significant barrier to EV adoption in the United States. On top of being insufficient to support the current crop of electric cars, America’s network of public EV-charging stations is often plagued with reliability issues. While refueling an internal combustion engine (ICE) car is a quick and simple procedure, charging your EV at a public charging station can be a long and frustrating process, especially for non-Tesla EV drivers. For many American drivers who can afford to transition to an electric car, this poor charging experience is enough to deter them from making the…

Starbucks Starts Installing EV Chargers at Locations

American multinational firm Starbucks has officially entered the electric-vehicle business with the launch of dozens of new EV charging stations at 15 locations between Denver and Seattle. The installation is part of a partnership between Starbucks and Swedish carmaker Volvo that will see the two companies install 50 Volvo charging stations at Starbucks locations in Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Any electric vehicle, regardless of brand, will be able to charge at the Volvo charging stations as long as they have CHadeMO or CCSI connectors. Both companies announced the charging station project in 2022 as part of efforts to…

Why EVs Are Better Than ICE Vehicles in Winter

Electric vehicles may offer drivers a more superior driving experience in the winter compared to their gas-powered counterparts. Although we know that cold weather can impact EV performance by slowing down chemical reactions in the battery and reducing output, EVs offer an objectively superior experience despite the limitations caused by cold weather. Loss of range during cold weather is unavoidable for EV drivers. On top of slowed chemical reactions in the battery limiting its output, your EV will also require energy to keep both the battery pack and the cabin warm. Since it generally requires more energy to heat an…

US Drivers May Need to Adjust Their Perception of EVs

Demand for electric vehicles among American drivers is cooling despite the recent rise in EV sales. A Pew Research Center poll from July 2023 found that one-half of Americans were unlikely to consider a battery electric car as their next vehicle and 13% were sure they didn’t want to buy an electric car. The report revealed that public interest in buying an electric car has dropped by 4% from May 2022, likely due to a couple of critical issues. The first is high prices that have made electric cars unaffordable for the vast majority of the American public. Limited confidence…

EVs Currently Prevent 1.8M Barrels of Oil from Being Used Daily3

A recent Bloomberg NEF report revealed that electric vehicles are partially responsible for cutting global oil use by nearly two million barrels every single day. The report indicates that although electric vehicle adoption is low in most markets, current EV use is already enough to reduce daily oil use by a substantial margin. Fossil fuels such as oil and coal were instrumental in enabling human industrialization, and they still play a key role in many nations’ energy mixes. Bloomberg NEF estimates that global demand for oil from the road transport segment will peak at around 42.3 million barrels per day…

Detroit Starts Testing Wireless EV-Charging Technology

Detroit has begun testing wireless electric-vehicle charging technology in what is reportedly the first public wireless EV-charging roadway project in the country. Crews installed copper inductive charging coils underneath a quarter-mile segment of 14th Street between Marantette and Dalzelle Streets near Michigan Central. The Michigan Transportation department says the quarter-mile segment will act as a test drive for the wireless charging technology before it is rolled out to the general public. Wireless EV charging is a relatively recent invention that bypasses wired charging infrastructure to deliver energy directly from chargers to EV batteries. While the technology has already been deployed…

Toyota Looks to Fuel Cell, Battery EVs to Facilitate Carbon Neutrality

Toyota, unlike the vast majority of other established automakers and EV startups, has overwhelmingly invested in fuel-cell vehicles instead of battery electric cars. Aside from the Toyota Prius and RAV4 hybrid, Toyota’s only alternative energy offering is the Mirai, one of the few hydrogen fuel cell vehicles traversing America’s roads. With most automakers pledging to invest billions of dollars into the development and manufacture of zero-emission battery electric cars (BEVs) over the next few decades, Toyota seems to have doubled down on its efforts to develop fuel cell EVs rather than conventional electric cars. However, a team of global and…
