Weak Demand Leads VW to Temporarily Halt Production at EV Plants

German automaker Volkswagen has revealed that it is pausing EV production at two manufacturing plants in response to weak electric vehicle demand. The carmaker will suspend production at the Zwickau and Dresden facilities for a week in October and plans to cut the working week at an EV production plant in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, by one day.  Volkswagen joins a growing number of automakers who have paused or scaled back battery electric vehicle (BEV) production due to low market demand. While Chinese automakers can now produce and sell their electric cars at incredibly low costs, Western automakers still spend more…

Chinese Hypercar Sets New EV Speed Record in Germany

An electric hypercar developed in China recently became the fastest production vehicle in the world when it nearly hit 500 km/h in speed tests at a German facility. Built by the luxury sub-brand of Chinese EV giant BYD, Yangwang, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme shattered previous production vehicle speed records for both electric and gas-powered cars, reaching a staggering 496.22 km/h at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track on 14 September.  The record test run was conducted by German racing specialist Marc Basseng, breaking the previous speed record set by German test driver Andy Wallace in 2019 at the Ehra-Lessien facility…

Porsche Shares Slump as Company Faces Major Headwinds

Porsche just got hammered by investors after admitting what everyone already suspected: betting big on electric vehicles while your customers still want gas-powered sports cars is a recipe for financial disaster. The German luxury carmaker's shares tanked over 7% on Monday after the company slashed its profit margin guidance from a respectable 5-7% down to 2% for 2025, basically admitting they completely misread the market. The whole mess stems from Porsche trying to force an electric transition on customers who aren't buying it, literally. Rising U.S. tariffs, weaker demand, and China's economic slowdown have created a perfect storm that's forcing…

Huawei, GAC Partnership Unveils New EV Brand

Chinese tech giant Huawei has forged an unprecedented automotive alliance with GAC Group, creating a premium electric vehicle venture targeting luxury market segments. Dubbed ‘Qijing', the new brand name translates as "Enlightened Realm" and positions itself within China's dynamic automotive landscape where domestic manufacturers increasingly challenge European and Japanese luxury brands.  GAC has made it clear that this won't be a simple side venture, creating an independent operational structure for the venture and appointing dedicated engineering teams to oversee product development from initial concept through mass production phases.  Huawei joins Xiaomi as the second Chinese firm that typically produces consumer…

Tesla Comes Under Regulatory Scrutiny Over Jammed Doors Trapping Kids

Regulators in the U.S. have launched a probe into electric vehicle giant Tesla in response to reports of jammed doors trapping children in Teslas. After several reports emerged of Tesla door handles failing and trapping kids inside 2021 Model Ys, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began a preliminary review into Tesla and its flagship electric vehicle.  Although the NHTSA received just nine reports of Tesla doors jamming, the agency is taking this quite seriously, and its preliminary investigations found that the issue occurs when door locks do not receive enough voltage. Four of the Tesla drivers who…

Why EVs Could Trigger Motion Sickness, and Ways to Cope

Phil Bellamy thought he was doing his family a favor when he switched to an electric car for the daily school run. Instead, his teenage daughters now refuse to ride with him unless they take motion sickness tablets first. What should have been a smooth, quiet ride turned into a daily battle with nausea that only happened in his electric vehicle.  Bellamy's experience isn't unique. Research shows that people who never had motion sickness problems in conventional cars are developing symptoms when riding in electric vehicles. The issue has become significant enough that families are changing their travel plans and…

Reports Indicate Another Phone Giant is Entering the EV Fray

Another major smartphone manufacturer may be entering the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment after both Apple and Xiaomi tried their hand at BEV manufacturing with varying results. While Apple spent over a decade and invested a whopping $10 billion into its electric vehicle ambitions and ultimately shut the project down without selling a single EV, Xiaomi's debut electric car was incredibly successful and the Chinese company has received hundreds of thousands of pre-orders.  Samsung, the most dominant Android smartphone developer, is reportedly dipping its toes into the burgeoning electric vehicle segment, becoming the third smartphone manufacturer to include electric vehicle…

PHEVs Provide the Sweet Spot Between Gasoline and Pure Electric Vehicles

Battery-powered vehicles with gasoline backup systems can act as a bridge between gas-powered cars and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Referred to as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), these hybrid solutions reduce range anxiety concerns among potential EV drivers while introducing consumers to electric propulsion technology in a familiar format.  Unlike conventional hybrids that supplement gasoline engines with minimal battery assistance, these vehicles can travel 20 to 30 miles on electricity alone before engaging their combustion engines. This is enough electric range to cover most daily commuting and local errands, and the combustion engine essentially provides unlimited travel range through traditional…

Trump’s Hostility to EVs Will Impact the Transition to Clean Energy

The Trump administration's evident hostility to electric cars will have a major effect on America's transition to renewables. Shortly after President Trump assumed office, he began a campaign to undo most of the Biden administration's climate action-related policies and has since rescinded over 100 policies designed by the previous administration to boost electric vehicle adoption in the country. In addition to slowing down EV adoption, these actions may impact the country's transition from fossil fuels to green energy.  Research from Carnegie Mellon University has demonstrated how the current administration's decision to pull federal support for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) could…

Canada Eases EV Mandate as US Tariffs Cause Upheavals

Ottawa has scrapped its plan requiring automakers to sell emission-free cars as one-fifth of their inventory next year, bowing to industry pressure as businesses struggle with punitive duties from Washington. Mark Carney's Liberal administration announced the reversal Friday, abandoning a key climate policy his predecessor Justin Trudeau had championed just two years earlier.  The backtrack represents a stunning capitulation to automotive lobbying groups who complained about financial strain from the mandate. Car manufacturers had argued they couldn't simultaneously meet environmental targets while absorbing costs from American import penalties targeting multiple Canadian industries, creating what they described as an impossible operational…
